Floor-loaded containers buy cheaper freight and pay for it at the receiving door. What devanning involves, what drives the labor, and why damage checks only work at intake.

Two containers can hold the same product and create completely different amounts of work at the receiving door. One arrives palletized: a forklift pulls the loads out, and the freight is on the dock in under an hour. The other arrives floor-loaded — cartons hand-stacked wall to wall, no pallets inside — and every single carton has to be moved by hand before anything can be put away.

If you import, you will meet floor-loaded containers, and the intake plan matters more than the storage rate.

Why containers get floor-loaded in the first place

Floor loading exists for one reason: cube. Pallets consume height and footprint inside the container, and their deck boards waste vertical space. Hand-stacking cartons directly onto the container floor fits more units per container, which lowers the freight cost per unit.

That saving is real, and it is paid for at the other end. The labor to unload a floor-loaded container — devanning — moves from a machine to a crew.

What devanning actually involves

Devanning a floor-loaded container is not simply emptying it. Done properly, it is four jobs happening at once:

  1. Unloading — cartons come off the stack, usually by hand, sometimes onto a roller or extendable conveyor
  2. Sorting — mixed-SKU containers have to be separated as they come out, or they will be separated later at higher cost
  3. Pallet building — cartons are stacked into pallet loads that match how the product will be stored or shipped next
  4. Condition checking — damage and shortages are identified while the freight is still attributable to the shipment

Skipping step four is the most common shortcut, and the most expensive. Once cartons are wrapped and in racking, a crushed corner becomes your problem rather than a documented inbound exception.

What drives the time it takes

Devanning throughput varies widely between shipments, and the variables are worth knowing before you commit to a delivery appointment:

None of these are exotic. They are simply the reason a per-container quote without a carton count, a weight, and a SKU count is a guess.

Damage checks belong at the door

A floor-loaded container concentrates damage risk: cartons bear the weight of the cartons above them, and there is no pallet structure absorbing transit shock. The intake pass is the only moment when a problem is cheap to record.

A workable inbound check captures the container's condition on opening, whether the load had shifted, a count against the packing list, cartons with visible crushing or water staining set aside rather than put away, and photographs of anything abnormal. That record is what supports a claim conversation with a supplier or carrier later; reconstructing it from racked inventory rarely works.

Decide the pallet profile before the container opens

The pallets built at the door determine how the product behaves for the rest of its stay. Building purely for storage density and then rebuilding for outbound means paying to touch the same cartons twice.

Worth settling in advance:

  • Cartons per pallet and tier pattern, matched to your racking and to how the product ships out
  • Whether part of the container is pre-allocated and should be built to a destination spec immediately
  • Whether any SKUs need separation by lot, date code, or production run
  • Which SKUs are fast movers and should land in accessible pick locations rather than deep reserve

Where those pallets go next, and how the count becomes trusted on-hand inventory, is the subject of where inventory accuracy is actually won.

Book the door, not just the warehouse

A floor-loaded container ties up a dock position and a crew for a long block of time. Containers also arrive under free-time terms, with per-day charges once that window closes — which means the appointment is part of the cost, not an administrative detail. Give your warehouse the container number, the carton count, the SKU breakdown, the approximate carton weight, and the packing list before the container arrives — not on the day. Intake planned around real numbers is the difference between a container that clears in one shift and one that blocks a door.
