Big and bulky items break in predictable places — corners, edges, and wherever a forklift touched them. A look at edge protection, void fill, palletization and the freight paperwork that decides who pays when something arrives damaged.
Parcel-sized goods get damaged by drops. Oversized goods get damaged by handling — a forklift tine into a side panel, a strap tightened onto an unprotected corner, a stack that shifted in transit. The failure modes are different, so the packaging answers are different too.
If you are moving furniture, appliances, fitness equipment, planters, sinks or anything else that lives on a pallet rather than in a box, here is where the damage actually comes from and what to do about it.
Four patterns cover most of it:
Notice that three of the four happen in a warehouse or on a trailer, not on a doorstep. That is why last-mile service selection alone does not solve damage on big goods.
Build outward from the product:

Two layers get skipped most often and cause the most claims. Edge board is cheap and it is the difference between strapping that compresses a corner and strapping that distributes load. Immobilisation is the one people substitute loose void fill for — loose fill settles under vibration, and a heavy item that settles is a heavy item that is now loose.

A well-packaged item on a badly built pallet is still a damage claim.
More packaging is not always the answer, because protective material adds dimensions and dimensions drive freight cost. Two useful checks:
The honest framing is a trade-off, not an optimisation: you are choosing a point on a curve between material spend, freight spend and damage rate, and the right point depends on unit value and replacement cost.
For bulky freight, damage is usually discovered at delivery rather than in a warehouse — and freight claims turn on what was written down at that moment.
That last point is the one that turns damage handling into something useful. A per-SKU damage log tells you which items need a packaging redesign and which carriers or lanes are the issue.
Protective packaging for heavy goods is a per-SKU engineering decision, not a warehouse default. It gets made once, documented as a pack spec, and then repeated — which is exactly the kind of thing that goes wrong when it lives in someone's head instead of a written standard.
